Women scientists leading the way: Weaving Innovation for Women Farmers empowerment
The ICAR-Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna, successfully concluded a 7-day stitching training program on March 11, 2025 at Dulhin Bazar, Patna. This initiative was conducted under the PRAYAS program and supported by the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP), aimed to equip women with essential skills for self-reliance and economic sustainability.
It is worth mentioning that during last year, sewing machines were distributed to women farmers under the said program. The evaluation and impact assessment was conducted by a team of scientists in regular interval. Further, to enhance the stitching skills, a 7-day training program was conducted during 01-07 March, 2025, aiming women empowerment and livelihood improvement of weaker section.
In parallel with the valedictory session, a Mahila Kisan Goshthi was organized for women farmers. Experts provided insights into advanced agricultural techniques, livestock management, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihood strategies. To further support their journey toward self-sufficiency, essential agricultural inputs such as vegetable seeds and irrigation pipes were distributed among the participants. These resources will help to improve their farming practices, ensuring nutritional security and economic stability. In this event, about 150 participants were actively involved including more than 100 women farmers.
Dr. Anup Das emphasized the significant role of women scientists and staff in empowering women from weaker sections, especially in agriculture. “Their involvement not only helps improve the livelihood of farm women but also fosters confidence, enabling them to take part in programs that enhance their skills, nutritional security and economic stability.
During the program, Dr. Shivani, Principal Scientist highlighted that this empowerment can lead to long-term positive outcomes for rural communities by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and improving overall well-being.
Dr. Ujjwal Kumar, Head, DSEE said, "This initiative is a step toward self-reliance and prosperity for rural communities. Women, in particular, play a significant role in agriculture and household income.
The event was organized by a team of dedicated experts, including Dr. Shivani, Dr. Rajni Kumari, Dr. Rachana Dubey, Dr. Kumari Shubha, Dr. Kirti Saurabh, Dr. Arti Kumari, Smt. Nupur Kumari, Smt. Usha Kiran and Sh. Umesh Kumar Mishra, whose collective efforts ensured the program’s success.
“Such programs are instrumental in strengthening rural communities and promoting inclusive growth in the agricultural sector. Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Anup Das, ICAR-RCER, Patna, remains committed to enhancing farmer livelihoods through technology transfer, training, and resource distribution," said Sh.
